Hungary probably does not cross your mind when someone talks about wine. It is actually a very active wine loving country that's rich in wine history and tradition, even if it may not be widely known. You may be among the top percentage of wine lovers, but because Hungary's wine traditions are only just beginning to spread, it is likely you had never known about it. Hungary's climate is anything subtle and consistent. With very hot summers and strikingly cold winters, the land is able to offer an array of rich, fertile soils. The variety of soils in turn can produce many different kinds of grapes that Hungarians create an amazing and unique line of wines. In fact, there are 20 different wine regions covered with forest areas, vineyards, and varying orchards!

Even though Hungary has been controlled by communism in days past, they have been able to build an impressive list of wines. If you ask anyone who is native to the area what the best wine is, you are likely to be told about Tokay Aszu; this is easily the most preferred wines in the region. Hungarians love complimenting meals and desserts with this delicious wine, but elsewhere it tends to be favored with desserts.

Tokay Aszu came into existence in the 17th century, and whimsical rumors floated around that it contained mystical healing power. Of course, this was just that; a rumor. However, it greatly helped the popularity of it skyrocket, especially among the European aristocrats. Eventually it was apparent that this was by far the favorite wine in Hungary, and slowly became popular among other places as well.

There are other wines that rank among the top in Hungary, too. One of these is the Egri Bikaver, which is also called Bulls Blood. Surprisingly, it was discovered before the Tokay Aszu sometime during the 16th century. The name Bulls Blood is derived from its color; it is a dark red wine that offers an unexpected sweetness, and brings a certain delight to anyone who appreciates wine.

Should you ever take a trip to Hungary, there are numerous areas you can stop at for some great wine. One of the places to make a point of visiting is Tokay. If you are there between May and October you can partake in many tours, and wine tasting events that are open to the public.

Hungarian wine is a fine addition to keep in your cupboards if you are a wine lover, and you are sure to find a favorite among their many varieties.
