How to Make Your Own Wine at Home
By Mike Carraway
You can make your own wine at home following these simple, step by step instructions!
The first step to making your own wine is to decide which fruit juice or grape juice you want to make wine out of. It is possible to make wine from fruits, juices, flowers, herbs and many other easy to find ingredients.
Once you have chosen what you want to make your own wine out of, the next step is to put enough sugar in the juice to get it's specific gravity up to at least 1.1. Specific gravity is a measure of the weight of your juice mixtures relative to the weight of water. You can easily measure the specific gravity by using a hydrometer.
The next step in making your own wine is to put enough sulfites or campden tablets into the mixture to make sure that you kill any unwanted bacteria. usually, 4 crushed campden tablets in 5 gallons will take care of it. Mix it in good, lightly cover your bucket with a towel or just set the lid on, and let it sit for 24 hours.
The next step to make your own wine at home is to put in your yeast. While you could use baker's yeast from a grocery store, that kind of yeast only has an alcohol tolerance up to about 10 or 11 percent. Wine making yeast has a tolerance up to about 15 percent alcohol so I recommend using wine making yeast.
Once you put in the yeast, you are on your way to making your own wine. All you have to do is wait about 10 days.
After the 10 day wait, siphon off the wine, being carful not to suck up the sediment in the bottom of the bucket. Siphon it into another clean sterilized vessel or bucket.
To make sure you are successful when you make your own wine at home, let the wine sit, sealed, with an airlock so that the carbon dioxide can escape. Let it sit for another month and then you are ready to bottle it.
Be sure and taste it first!
