How to Make Wine - No Time?
By Mike Carraway
So - you'd like to try your hand at making homemade wine but don't think you have the time to devote to it? Think again.
Making your own wine actually only takes about 2 hours of YOUR time.
'WOW! Making my own homemade wine only takes 2 hours? Great! Show me how!'
Sorry, notice that I said it only takes about 2 hours of YOUR time. The total time required is several months. But the good thing is - YOU don't have to do anything for most of that time - the wine will basically make itself.
Here's what YOU actually have to do and how long it will take:
Sterlize/Clean all of your equipment - 10 minutes is all it takes. Just get some B-Brite sanitizer, mix it in hot water and then splash it over everything. All you need to start is a big plastic bucket anyway. Just clean it really good.
Put your juice in the big bucket - gee - that'll take a whopping 3 minutes. (if your juice or 'must' needs acid or sugar balancing, that will add an additional 15 minutes) Then you'll need to add some crushed campden tablets and that will take another 2 minutes. Now you are DONE for the next 24 hours. You do not have to do anything else...yet.
24 hours later, add your yeast and put a loose cover over the bucket. Time required? About a minute. Now all you have to do is wait about 7 days and let nature take it's course. The yeast will start fermenting the wine - see? Wine makes itself, YOU don't actually make it.
After 7 days, you need to sterilize your secondary carboy and then siphon the wine from the bucket to the secondary. Time required? About 15 minutes.
Now, you just put an airlock on top and wait... well YOU don't actually sit there and wait, YOU can go about your business and forget about the wine for about 8 weeks. After the 8 week period has passed, you may want to siphon or rack it again into another container - again - about a 15 minute operation.
After another couple of months, that stuff is ready to drink! Of course, if you want to put it in bottles, that would be nice too and depending on how much you made, could take you all of 3 minutes per bottle.
Yes - making wine at home takes time - BUT - not YOUR time. It really only takes a couple of hours for 25 bottles!
