Not too many people are going to consider using coupons if they decide to go on a bender. They get drunk for all sorts of emotional and psychological reasons, but not to many decide to get drunk because they can save money. However, money is money, and the money you save drinking wine can pay for a cab ride home, or a stomach pump in the emergency room. So what is the point of this article, and why am I rambling about drinking, a topic I have little personal interest in? Well, I want to teach you that properly marketed coupon offers produce outstanding results, even for products and services not normally associated with saving money. It is kind of like going to Las Vegas and asking if there are any discount gambling coupons for playing blackjack. (Buy 1 chip, get 1 free! I don't think so).



But Wine and wine products seem to get a good play. Here are some wine coupons I have collected and the psychological tactics behind the offers.



1. Happy Hour every day 7 to 10 pm. Bring a friend and buy 1 get 1 free on selected items ( limit two free drinks). This is a great door opener. Get the customers in, get them a couple of free drinks with their friends and do you think they are going to leave. I don't. They will spend more money on more drinks, cigars, and food then the cost of the two free drinks. A classic case of something free that leads to an upsell situation.



2. 15% off any wine purchase. A great offer for impulse buying. Without this offer being made, you probably were not even thinking about wine.



3. Free bottle of wine. Offer valid with a purchase of dinner for two or more. This offer valid 4 to 7 pm on weekends. The restaurant owner is giving away something free to fill up his restaurant during off hours. The added revenue of 10 additional dinners or more during a slow period of the day can make or break the restaurant margin of profit for that day.



4. 20% off a case of wine. A nice discount for quantity purchases for a retailer who wants to move a larger volume of products.



5. First two glasses of wine tasting party free, with purchase of $45 wine tasting ticket, which includes 5 more wines. This offer is a bonus for someone who probably would pay the $45 anyways, but the extra bonus makes him enjoy the evening that much more.



This article is really not about wine and how to get drunk drinking it. Anybody could figure out how to do it. It is just a fun way to illustrate the importance of coupons in marketing and to briefly explain some of the ways they are used. They are used for upsells and downsells; for impulse buying and to increase margins during slow periods. Coupons are used to sell larger volumes of merchandise, and give bonuses to people to make them enjoy their buying experience a little more. These are just a few of the many ways coupons can help grow your business. It is something to think about!
