How to Grow Quality Grapes For Your Wine

How to Grow Quality Grapes For Your Wine
By Edouard Charles

What Quality of Grapevine to Choose?

Choose a good variety of grape. For example, note that the Neron (a Kuhlmann hybrid) is a strong, hearty, and quite productive grape variety, coming in larger clusters and berries than the Foch and the Millot varieties. You may want to choose this variety to get the most of your grapevine

What does it take to determine the taste of your wine? It is both in the quality and flavor of the grapes you harvest to create your wine. The most crucial steps to make your wine are in the planting and growing of the vine-yard. Let us go through each step , starting from the sunlight exposure to choosing the location for your vine-yard. Let us take the steps from the planning and the planting your vineyard. Let us talk from the caring for your vine for making the decision as to when to harvest your crop to create your delectable wine, the treasure of the earth.

The Sunlight
This is truly the most decisive element and factor for your vineyard; it reside in the sunlight your vine will receive all along the year. Also crucial, finding the best location as possible to grow your grapes naturally. It must be a location bathed with sunlight as much as possible.
Why the sun is so important? It is in the sunlight that resides the essential element in the photosynthesis process, which is a root of the growth of the grape. It give it its taste, nature and most important its sugar. From the basis that the more grapes contain sugar, the more sugar is going to convert to alcohol during the process of fermentation, along with a magnificent taste. So make sure your vine is receiving sunlight all day long, for it is in this factor that your will succeed.

The Terrain
Yet there is another significant element : the quality of the soil where you grow your grape-vines. Be aware that vines should never grow in a terrain that is either humid or wet. Therefore, make certain that you get an efficient drainage in the place where you plant your vine-yard. It is to note that a soil which lacks nutrients give smaller grapes, and smaller grapes are the best kind, and they will produce a superior wine. Note that you won't need to use any fertilizer nor compost about the vines. The exception is if the soil is so extremely poor, meaning that not even weeds grow on it, only and only then you could use some fertilizer. This is the only case.

The Planting of the Vine
In some cases, it may happen that you would lose some crop because of a bad year or a pest (e.g., birds or insects). It is then a good idea to plant more vines consistent with your desires in production for wine.
Note that: If you are deciding to plant a big vine-yard, then plant your vines approximately five to six feet apart, in rows that have a width of about fifteen to sixteen feet. Remember that there's a yield of roughly one gallon of wine for each vine.

The Care of the Vine
Because a grapevine is a vine, it requires to be planted on a trellis (or with wires) to grow on, as a support. While at the planting stage, dig large holes, for to let the soil loose around the base of the vines, which will allow a good drainage. While planting, tie up firmly the biggest shoot to the trellis, with a organic string. Note that the string is much better that the wire, because it cannot damage the vine. Then, cut if any shoot growing directly from the root. At some point in the dormant season, or the winter, assure that you tidy your vine. In Springtime, check your grapevine for buds, and assure that you tie the thickest shoot upright, as the other shoots growing from the main shoots (called 'arms'), arrange them regularly, and tie them loosely while they grow on the wire or trellis. Note that these shoot will become thicker and thicker as the years go by, steadily.

The Harvest
It is important to buy an Hydrometer for the harvest season. You can find them in any wine-making supply shop. The hydrometer measures the precise gravity of any liquid. Also it will show the precise sugar content of your grapes. The best is to get a gravity ranging from 1.095 to 1.105 between these two marks. If it reaches this level, then it is the time to harvest your grapes.

A Last Thought
This is a process that may take years to refine. You will progress through a trial-and-error process, regularly fine-tuning , taking this tip and throwing that other friend advice. But all together, it will be worth your while, particularly when the time comes, and you get and share a bottle of your own delicious wine with your friends. Then you will have a really good time. This will be your best time, cheering around your own grown wine.
