How to Achieve Success With White Wine Making at Home
By E J King
White wine making may have been relegated to the professionals- but that was before people realized that wine making can be done in their own homes. The popularity of making your own wine has given rise to many guidebooks, online and offline alike. Instead of buying expensive wines from winemakers, create your own homemade wines that can rival the best quality products.
There are three essential parts of white wine making. These are extraction of the flavor from the ingredients (the grapes, and then store bought extras), the fermentation process, and the bottling (which may include letting the wine mature a little before putting it in a bottle).
To be a success at white wine making, you should make sure that you are equipped to handle all three processes involved. You can find a list of all the materials you need in different resources available. But, basically, you would need the following: a plastic container that has a close-fitting lid (the capacity depends on how much wine you intend to make), a ladle (plastic or wooden), a large pan (for boiling if needed, could be aluminum, stainless, or enamel), fine nylon mesh ( for straining), fermenting vessels ( glass or plastic, can be bought from wine stores), an air lock (again, can be purchased in wine shops), a funnel, and bottles and stoppers for the finished product.
When making white wine, you will need to make sure that all the equipment you use is clean and sterilized. Aside from ensuring clear and clean wine, you also produce better tasting wine untainted with any form of unusual taste or aroma from bacteria or unwanted yeast.
The creation of white wine entails that you remove all skin and seeds of the grapes from your juice before fermentation. The clearer your juice is, the clearer the finished white wine will be. You can also use distilled water to make sure that the wine is clear. Clear grape juice would generally have less sugar than red ones so your white wine will have a lesser amount of alcohol as well. Some wine makers, to add a unique, buttery flavor to their whites, let their wines undergo second fermentation.
